50 mode and a limited-time stealth pistol that made a big difference in a game where noise is an important part of locating opponents. We've seen a grenade that makes people dance, a bold new 50 vs. But the game has really taken off since then: the team has proven a commitment to new items, mechanics and events in a way that the seemingly ponderous PUBG can't really manage.

In the beginning, those things plus the advantage of being Free-to-Play and beating PUBG to console led to impressive numbers in short order. It also works well - it's not bug-free, but PUBG is a notoriously unstable game. In my experience, it's not used very often, but it's a distinguishing feature nonetheless. It started out with construction mechanics: the player's ability to craft DIY structures lifted from the other side of the game.
The style was one thing - this was a lighthearted, cartoony game with a "dance" button, in stark contrast to the pseudo-realism of PUBG, even if that game winds up just as intentionally wacky. The last player standing wins.įortnite: Battle Royale quickly distinguished itself, however. When they find other players, they kill them, and when they die, they don't come back. They collect weapons and try to stay inside an ever-shrinking playable area. 100 players parachute onto a big island with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, and in the case of Fortnite, a pickaxe. And when the game hit, there was little effort made to allay claims those fears: functionally, these two are near-identical. It was seen as a copycat of a game built off of Epic Games' own Unreal Engine, and the developers behind PUBG even made vague overtures towards legal action. When Epic first announced that it was turning its zombie survival and base construction game into something that looked an awful lot like PUBG, people were skeptical.
